What a day, what a day.
To celebrate Bevin's life we kicked off at the Ransom Pentecostal AME Zion Church in Mallinson Road, Battersea SW11 1BP. Pastor Smith was presiding. Pastor Simpson, Pastor Walker and the outstanding Pastor Valerie Davis in support. The place was packed and it can hold 1000 people!
We had a reading by Barabra Fagan, Bevin's younger sister from the Bible [Psalms 90; 1-10]. Barbara flew over from Newark USA on Sunday night. We then had a fine and funny talk by Glaister Fagan, Bevin's brother and Matumbi member. He had us in stitches, we laughed and laughed. It was a good tribute. Glaister had organised for a recording of Bevin doing Blood and Fire. Then we had a rousing and heartfelt tribute from David Fagan, Bevin's younger brother who could easily have been a preacher, but he also made us laugh so much as well. What a guy. He was over from Maryland in the USA. Pastor Smith was really impressed. We had a tribute from Vee [Vilma Robinson] who grew up with Bevin and went to the same school. Trevor Edwards did another tribute about his heartfelt passion for Bevin. Faye, Bevin's older sister pointed out that "Bevin sang at his own funeral" with Blood and Fire, much to the good humour of the congregation and the Pastors present. In fact Pastor Smith had us all sing it twice. Faye also kept us all in fine humour with her anecdotes regarding Bevin's swimming skills and the time that Faye and Bevin ran from a beating due to sampling Grandmother's Wray and Nephew white rum! Sharon Simpson led the singing with her fantastic voice, Faye had called her "butterfly" when she was a child because she was so beautiful! Her father is Pastor Simpson who is incredible at age 86, gave a reading! The visiting preacher Valerie gave a voiceiferous and passionate reading and closing sermon. All of Bevin's 6 children were there, as were all the members of Matumbi, Frank Fire and Anthony Hall from Pure Mint. We then moved on to the burial at the Cemetary at Blackshaw Road, Tooting. The place was packed. So many people so many tributes from friends. We had singing from Pastor Smith and a trombone tribute. The relatives and friends filled in the grave and the flowers were arranged over the grave. A floral tribute to celebrate his life. We then moved off to the Golf Club in Burntwood Lane, Tooting. To eat drink and remember the life and achievements of Bevin. We listened to his music from samples from the DJ. There was Jochen and Nico from Berlin, who had recorded Bevin over there. There were friends, acquaintances and family. We all celebrated a life.
